INSA-CSIR-DAE/BRNS-CICS Travel Fellowship Programme (For Indian Scientists/Researchers affiliated to Indian Institutions)

CICS provides financial support towards partial travel / registration/ per diem to scientists/researchers in various disciplines such as Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, Medicine, Engineering, Space Science & Technology, Computer Science and Engineering and other related areas to attend international scientific conferences, seminars and workshops abroad. Highly meritorious candidates will be provided enhanced support. The selection committee consisting of eminent scientists, meets four times a year to scrutinize and recommend award of travel grants. This scheme is jointly sponsored by the Indian National Science Academy (INSA)/ Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR)/ Department of Atomic Energy (DAE)/ Board of Research in Nuclear Sciences(BRNS) and CICS. SCHOLARSHIP SCHEME FOR INDIAN WOMEN CANDIDATES WITH SCIENTIFIC QUALIFICATION FOR TRAINING IN IPR MATTERS

CICS has been associating with Patent Facilitating Centre, Technology Information, Forecasting and Assessment Council(TIFAC), New Delhi on ‘Training of Women Scientists on IPR Matters’. This scholarship scheme is launched by the Department of Science & Technology, New Delhi, intended for women having Science & Engineering qualification for training in the area of intellectual property rights, especially in patent searches, understanding of patent specification and preparation of technology scan report. This programme is executed in four Centres across India namely CICS, Chennai, TIFAC, New Delhi, URDIP, Pune and IIT, Kharagpur. A total number of 80-100 candidates are trained per year from all the regions out of which 20-25 candidates are trained in Chennai region.

The objective of this program is to

  • train talented and skilled women who have studied science, engineering or medicine in patent searches and other aspects of intellectual property rights in order to enable them to seek specialized employment or be self-employed
  • develop a pool of women scientists in India ready to undertake scientific and technical aspects of intellectual property rights
  • develop a core of professionals for preparing specialized reports such as technology scan based on patent information

Candidates with M.Sc/Ph.D in physical sciences, chemical sciences, life sciences or B.E/B.Tech/MCA, or M.E/M.Tech or MBBS/MS/MD/MVSc or B.Pharm/M.Pharm with good academic record are eligible to apply. Candidates are selected based on their performance in written test and interview and also based on all India Ranking. The selected candidates from all regions are offered common orientation programme at TIFAC, New Delhi during the first 4–5 weeks, followed by 11 month on-the-job training facilitated by respective centres.

Advertisement calling for applications appear in leading newspapers during October/November every year.

17 women scientists in the year 2008 – 2009, 16 women scientists in the year 2009 – 2010 and 13 women scientists in the year 2010 – 2011 underwent IPR training in various Law firms and R&D organizations facilitated by CICS.

The candidates are provided training to do prior art searches using databases such as Delphion, Freepatentsonline, USPTO, esp@cenet and Indian patent databases such as Ekaswa A and B, patent analysis, mapping, bucketization etc.

CICS organizes two workshops each year, one on ‘Patent Drafting’ and the other on ‘Copyrights, Trademarks, Industrial Designs and Geographical Indications’. Lead lectures and hands-on experience in drafting are covered.

OUTCOME

Among 19 candidates (From 2008-09, 2009-10 & 2010-11 batches) who appeared for Patent Agent exam, 12 candidates have cleared the exam with good ranks.

CICS is happy to place on record that so far 12 candidates have been absorbed /engaged on regular jobs

For the year 2012 - 2013, 20 Women Candidates have been selected for the on-the-job training

SCIENCE AWARENESS PROGRAMMES FOR SCHOOL CHILDREN

With the objective to motivate young minds into science stream and career in science, and to strengthen the S & T manpower base of our nation, Science Awareness Programmes are being organized for school children of IX, X and XI standard levels. Meritorious and talented students are nominated by the School Principals to attend this programme. Training sessions cover lecture/demonstrations, interactive sessions with subject experts, question-answer sessions, quiz programs, debate/essay competitions, discussion on career choices/opportunities and lab visits.

The following science awareness programmes were organized for school children during 2008 – 2010

SCIENCE MOTIVATIONAL AWARENESS AND RESEARCH TRIGGERING (SMART) PROGRAMME from 12-17 April 2010

The centre organized a week long "Science Motivational Awareness and Research Triggering (SMART)" programme sponsored by the Rashtirya Vigyan Evam Prodyogiki Sanchar Parishad of Department of Science and Technology, New Delhi during 12-17 April 2010. The programme was attended by twenty students accompanied by teachers representing Hindu Senior Secondary Schools Adyar and Triplicane, Chennai.

The progamme involved lectures by eminent scientists, Quiz competition, Counseling, interactive sessions and lab visits. Prizes were distributed to the Winners of the quiz competition.

  • History of Electromagnetics
  • For Earth´s sake
  • Lasers and its applications
  • Biotechnology
  • Number theory
  • Radio carbon dating
  • Learning physics by doing

The resource persons were drawn from Chennai Mathematical Institute, Indian Institute of Technology, Anna University, Central Leather Research Institute, The New College, The Presidency College, Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research and Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Chennai.

LEADING YOUNG STARS OF INDIA (LYSI) PROGRAMME from 28 April – 3 May 2008

During April – May 2008 ‘LEADING YOUNG STARS OF INDIA’ – LYSI – Science Awareness Program for XI and XII standard students was organized by the centre. This week-long program was sponsored by the Department of Science & Technology, New Delhi. 24 students from six Kendriya Vidyalaya schools in Chennai participated along with one teacher from each school.

The program involved lectures by eminent scientists, Quiz, essay competitions, Career counseling and interactive sessions
